Divorce advice - the UK divorce rate in 2004

divorce advice

Before divorce advice can be given it is first necessary to develop an appreciation for the UK divorce rate in 2004. The UK Divorce rate across England and Wales in 2004, remained at 14 divorces per thousand married. However, the divorce rate itself fell by 0.1% compared with the previous year. This implies that the drop in the total divorce rate was not an indication of fewer divorces, but rather that more people were opting for cohabitation than marriage (as the number of people getting divorced per thousand married has remained the same). The number of couples getting divorced in England and Wales reduced from 153,490 in 2003 to 153,399 in 2004 which was not reflected across the whole of United Kingdom (which includes Ireland and Scotland) as the over all divorce rate increased by 0.2%. However, this does not necessarily imply that the marital well being in Scotland and Ireland are any worse than those in England and Wales. This is because an increase in the marriage rate could be reflected in an increase in the divorce rate. Other marital statistics that may be of interest is that in England and Wales, out of a total of 167,193 petitions filled for divorce only 153,399 were granted separation. This statistics means that the figures for the number of people granted divorce is the highest it has been since 1996. The marital statistics also shows that the number of people who were divorced in England and Wales were significantly greater between couples whose marriage was their first than those who had previously been married. The statistics showed that 69% of all first time marriages resulted in divorce, compared with only 10% of those who had been previously married. Interestingly enough, 69% of all divorces were granted to women, of which, over half were granted on the grounds of Unreasonable Behavior. These statistics also showed that the highest divorce rate belonged to the category of people who were in their mid to late twenties with children younger than the age of 16 years old.
