Divorce advice - the UK divorce rate in 2005

divorce advice

Before divorce advice can be given it is first necessary to develop an appreciation for the UK divorce rate in 2005. The UK Divorce rate in 2005 fell by 7.7%, compared with the previous year. The UK divorce rate fell from 153,294 couples in 2004 to 141,583 in 2005, but this is not in itself a reflection of the state of marital welfare as the marriage rate also dropped in 2005 by 10.4%! This implies that more people were choosing cohabitation to marriage. The drop in the marriage rate not withstanding, the divorce rate also showed that the greatest fall in the number of couples getting divorced belonged to the under 40s age bracket. The divorce statistics for men and women under the age of 40 has dropped by 13% and 12% respectively, the largest drop since 1988 for men, and since 1990 for women. There has also been a drop in the divorce rate in Scotland and Northern Ireland, by 3% and 6% respectively during 2005, although it is important to point out that as with England and Wales, this may very well have been caused by a significant drop in the marriage rate.

UK divorce rate in 2005

The UK divorce rate in 2005 showed that more women divorced on the ground of adultery than men. The statistics showed that 23% of women were granted divorce on the grounds of adultery as apposed to the 18% of men. This implies that during this period, more men had extra marital affairs than women. But infidelity was not the biggest category in the grounds for which divorce was granted. Statistics showed that the largest category belonged to the Unreasonable Behavior of a spouse group. Interestingly enough, as with the infidelity statistics, the number of women granted divorce on the grounds of "Unreasonable behaviour" exceeded that of men. A staggering 53% of women were granted divorce on the grounds of unreasonable behaviour as apposed to 31% of men. However, it is important to also highlight the fact that, under the England and Wales divorce law, the grounds for divorce under the category of Unreasonable Behavior is the most straight forward and the quickest for which divorce is granted. As such, one reason for which this category has been the largest could be because couples recognise that this as being one of the easiest categories for which divorce is granted. So, it may be that more couples are opting for a quick divorce rather than what may actually be the real reason.
