In marriage counseling anxiety is defined as an unpleasant psychological or physiological feeling that is triggered by a perceived threat. The extent of which anxiety is felt varies according to the scenario and the individual involved. However, when it becomes excessive then it is commonly referred to as an Anxiety Disorder. An anxiety sufferer often exhibits physical symptoms such as heart palpitations,
stomachaches, fatigue, nausea, chest pain, shortness of breath and headaches. These symptoms are the natural responses to the body's subconscious Fight-or-Flight mechanism. When a threat is perceived, be it physical or psychological, the body reacts through preparatory physical responses that provide a chance to escape. These responses often involve short sharp bursts of muscularly stimuli, which include increased heart rate, a raised blood pressure and the secretion of hormones necessary to ensure the optimum muscular responses. However, this very mechanism designed to help protect the body from threats, can prove to be damaging and harmful if used over a period of time. The human society and interaction is such that it exposes us to a constant barrage of perceived threats, which inevitably leads to a misuse of the body's Fight-or-Flight mechanism and that in turn results in feelings of anxiety. The external signs of a person suffering from this would include pale skin, sweating, trembling and pupil
dilation.
Marriage counseling techniques to alleviate anxiety
Everyone experiences anxiety to a different extent, marriage counseling helps to alleviate and take control of these feelings of perceived threat. The first step would be to identify the trigger or the cause of the perceived threat. Having identified this, it is necessary to challenge its reality, which must be done by being overly sceptical about the perceived threat. Developing this scepticism will eventually lead to a conscious control over a natural subconscious reaction. Even if the perceived threat is real, but is likely to be over an extended period of time, it is still vital to have some control over the subconscious Fight-or-Flight mechanism, as failure to do so will result in physical disorders.
There are a number of techniques that can be used to control our perception of a threat and consequentially its associated mental anguish. Through relaxation techniques a person is able to have some degree of control over the subconscious activities within the brain, especially over emotions and feelings such as stress. Anxiety pitches the brain at a state of high arousal so through relaxation a person is then able to lower the brain's activity to the extent that the subconscious is also affected. These relaxation techniques can be anything calming, ranging from a hot bath, to relaxing music or yoga. Another way of controlling anxiety would be to control its physical symptoms. One of the first signs of anxiety is a change in the breathing pattern. A shallow breathing is a common symptom, it is therefore important to learn to breath deeply and slowly. Research has shown that deep breathing can enable a person to over-ride feelings of stress, lower blood pressure and provide some control over the heart rate, all of which are common symptoms of anxiety.
